This horror story happened to a friend...she's still trying to figure out how to fight the IRS! She's married..she and her husband didn't know much at all about filing taxes so they listened to the tax preparer and filed married filing single. She claimed the two children, received her return and the next year was audited. For two years straight she was audited and was told she owed the IRS money she received in error because the children were not hers! She sent proof--birth certificates, school registration, etc. The preparer said she sent the IRS all the information but the IRS said they did not receive it in time. Next the IRS informed them that someone else claimed the children. Needless to say the young lady now owes the IRS thousands and has set up a payment plan. The preparer said she doesn't understand what happened and now she's basically left the couple on their own to figure it out. It's almost impossible to get someone on the phone to try and make heads or tails of this...and as so many people probably do they just decided to at least start paying before the IRS attaches their wages (since earlier they froze their bank accounts!) Can you even fight the IRS?? It doesn't seem so....

Of course, my horror story does not count in the contest but I had to share my story. About 10 years ago my wife and I needed to get our taxes done and obviously expected a nice refund to pay some past due bills. We decided to go to a popular tax franchise. The lady that did our taxes asked for our W-2's and other tax forms. She never asked us another word regarding deductions or whether or not we itemize. Since taxes was foreign to us at that time we was at the preparer's mercy. She completed the tax return and then asked if we wanted a rapid refund. Of course we do, we really needed the money. She completed the rapid refund forms and then told us what the cost would be. We simply told her to take it out of the refund we would get. She said we was not getting a refund, but owed. I asked her why would she asked us if we wanted to process our return as a rapid refund if we was not getting a refund. She told us that we gave her permission to file our taxes that way and payment was needed in order to get our tax records back. We had to borrow money from someone to pay her, not only the tax preparation charges, but a rapid refund fee. It was not to long after that I decided to learn taxes, start my own business and teach a tax course every year since. This experience has given us a passion not only for filing tax returns, but educating our clients so they understand how to minimize their tax liability and increase their tax refund!
